Dear Majority Leader Reid, Speaker Boehner, Minority Leader McConnell, and Minority Leader Pelosi:
As companies that manufacture throughout the United States, we urge you to work together to expedite passage of the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) as quickly as possible.
The MTB is a package of more than 2,000 individual bills that cut import tariffs on necessary inputs and products that are not produced or available in the United States. This package is important to promote the global competitiveness of small, medium and large manufacturers throughout the United States and boost production, jobs, and exports in a challenging global economy.
Congress’s failure to act on this legislation by December 31, 2012 means taxes on over 600 products have increased as of January 1, 2013 and hundreds more face unnecessary tariff burdens.
For three decades, Congress has recognized the importance of suspending import taxes on essential manufacturing inputs. Failure to pass the MTB as soon as possible will continue adding to the 20 percent cost differential that U.S. manufacturers already face, resulting in further losses of important manufacturing opportunities and jobs.
We strongly urge you to work in a bipartisan and bicameral manner to ensure expeditious passage of the MTB.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
